ETHEL_SG_1“Sing-Galing’s” original diva and champion Ethel Booba returned to the iconic game show as a special guest for the season, starting on its June 1 episode. The champion diva will surely be providing  more laughter to the show.

Produced by Cignal TV and TV5, “Sing-Galing” encourages anybody who enjoys singing—young or old, professional or amateur—to join in, heralding its slogan “Magkaka-sing galing tayong lahat!” Each episode has three singtestants competing in three rounds to crown the BidaOke Star of the Night, who will vie for a spot in the grand finale. 

In 2002, Ethel Booba kicked off her television career on the variety singing competition, where she successfully defended her title as “BidaOke Star” for four weeks. Known equally for her flamboyant outfits as well as her powerful singing voice, the popular comedienne is simply one of the most iconic “Sing-Galing” singtestants to ever grace the show’s stage. She sang her own rendition of classic songs such as “Memory” by Barbra Streisand, “My Valentine” by Martina McBride & Jim Brickman, and “All Behind Us Now” by Patti Austin, for which she was able to win and reign as a champion.

As part of her special comeback this season, the “OG BidaOke Star” prepared a remarkable surprise for all “Sing-Galing” viewers. Having her back on the program will surely double the show’s already exciting challenges and hilarious antics — led by hosts and Sing Masters Randy Santiago, Donita Nose, and K Brosas, and the panel of judges and Juke Bosses Rey Valera, Ronnie Liang, and Jessa Zaragoza.

Originally aired in the late 1990s, “Sing-Galing” is a multi-awarded Videoke Game program that was the first of its kind in the Philippines and Asia, allowing everyone an equal chance to win and earn by singing. Viewers can also watch upcoming supporting content for PoPinoy while waiting for the main show on weekends: “Idols of Pinoy Pop: Manila Sound to KPop, ”a one-episode documentary by Lourd de Vera will premiere on June 6 at 8pm on TV5 and 9:30pm on Colours; “PoPinoy All Access”, a streaming show that will air on weekdays, across all TNT and Popinoy’s social media platforms, will feature exclusive behind-the-scenes, auditions, and an all-access backstage pass;  and “POPDates,” a recap show of the day’s highlights will air on weekdays at 9:30pm beginning June 14, both hosted by Anikka dela Cruz.

Further in the competition, viewers will have access to more content on Colours that focuses on the aspirants’ journey: “Popinoy UpClose,” a chat-musical with interviews featuring those who have advanced to the Top 10, will premiere on July 9 at 9:30pm on Colours and “Journey to the Finish,”  a more intimate  feature-focus show on each of the Top 3 girl-and-boy groups, will premiere on October 9, 9:30pm, both hosted by Adrianna So.

‘Lunch Out Loud,’ big winner in ratings, prizes

Proving to be a big winner is “Lunch Out Loud (LOL).”  It is now ahead of the game when it comes to viewership and ratings, even  against “It’s Showtime,” which has been on air for almost a decade!

Launched on October 2020, “LOL” is  hosted by Billy Crawford a.k.a. Daddy Bills, Alex Gonzaga,  Bayani Agbayani, KC Montero, Ariel Rivera, Wacky Kiray and K Brosas. Their energy, chemistry and  banter are on point: just the perfect combination to get viewers hooked on the noontime show!

Despite being new on the scene, TV5’s “LOL” has surpassed long-running noontime shows in the Philippines. From December 2020 to March 2021, LOL took the #1 spot on ratings, getting ahead of “It’s  Showtime” which airs on A2Z. On January, “LOL” garnered 816K Average Minute Ratings (AMR)–the  highest on record for “LOL.” In comparison, “It’s Showtime” garnered 559K AMR on the same month.

Pinoys have always been fond of singing especially the videoke way, so it’s interesting to know that “Sing-Galing,” the original videoke game show is set to make a comeback. 

Cignal Entertainment and TV5 are bringing  back the well-loved pioneer videoke game show! Set to premiere this Monday, April 5, at 6:30pm on TV5. “Sing-Galing” has been upgraded with its new features, extra challenges, and hilarious antics. The director of the show enjoins everyone to make the show part of their dinner fare (“hapunan”).

Aiming to reach anyone who loves to sing — young or old; pro or amateur — the show encourages everyone to join in, ‘“Magkaka-sing galing tayong lahat!,” so its mantra says. Each episode offers a platform for three contestants, dubbed as singtestants, to compete through three fun rounds that will challenge their luck, knowledge of songs, and lyrics recall, to determine the BidaOke Star of the Night who will be vying all the way to the grand finals. 

With the help and expertise of Sing Masters Randy Santiago, Donita Nose, and K Brosas, as the show’s hosts, and Juke Bosses Rey Valera, Ronnie Liang, and Jessa Zaragoza as the jury, both the contenders and Ka-Awit-Bahay are up for weeknight harmonies with their family and loved ones. Even the iconic Genie is back, this time with a revamped look to go along with his onscreen antics. Netizens, meanwhile, also get a chance to experience “Sing-Galing”s  digiverse, to be hosted by Viral Zinger Zendee.

On what viewers can look forward to, Ronnie Liang said, “Dito sa Sing Galing mai-expect nating mga ka-awitbahay of course ‘yung labanan ng mga pagalingan sa pagvi-videoke. Masusubok pa lalo kung sino talaga ‘yung master when it comes to doing the videoke thing. Kaming mga Jukebosses naman, makikita nila kung gaano kami kagaling mag-analyze ng mga performances nila sa pagvi-Videoke.”

On that note, Jessa Zaragoza added, “Sa tingin ko talagang magkakaroon kami ng pagkakaiba sa desisyon. Bilang mga Jukebosses siguradong iba-iba kaming mapipili niyan pero sigurado akong malalaman namin kung sino ang pinaka-may K kumanta.”

First aired in the late ‘90s, “Sing-Galing” – which is a multi-awarded Videoke Game show, and the first of its kind in the Philippines and Asia—gives equal opportunity for everyone to earn by simply singing. Participants don’t need to be experts and professionals in the art; they only need guts and fun to compete at a karaoke format.

“Napanood ko ito dati, maganda siya. Hindi kasi siya napakapormal tapos may tawanan din. So maaaliw ka kahit paano, enjoyable siya panoorin. Dito mo makikita ‘yung culture ng mga Filipino bilang mga singer, mga mahihilig sa videoke,” recalled Donita Nose, to which fellow host Randy Santiago seconded, saying: “Very expressive ‘yung mga Filipino di ba, regardless whether nasa tono ka o maganda ‘yung boses mo, pero kapag nando’n ka sa mga handaan, makikita mo ‘yung mga pamilya talaga hindi makakalampas na hindi ka kakanta eh. ‘Yon ang pagka-Filipino. Hindi pwedeng sasabihin mo na, hindi ka marunong kumanta, lahat kahit paano may tono. At alam naman natin kapag videoke, may score ‘yon at ‘yon ang nakakatuwa.”

More than anything, this is TV5’s way of providing relief during a time of uncertainty. “Sing Galing!” not only brings the karaoke bar or party experience closer to home, but it also creates an avenue for families and communities to bond and come together in song.

K Brosas assured, “Masaya ‘to, fun, I think ‘yon lang naman ang ating goal, na sa gabi, sa hapunan ay light, kantawanan, di ba? Masarap na hindi masyadong serious na kantahan dahil ‘yung mga hosts hindi naman din seryoso masyado. It’s gonna be fun, super fun.”

Just recently, Cignal TV and TV5 revealed in a virtual mediacon that star athlete, TV host, and celebrity advocate Gretchen Ho is the newest face to join the Kapatid Network’s growing roster of artists. As she expressed excitement and gratitude over this latest feat in her professional career, network executives and fellow news anchors equally gave the “Woman in Action” a warm welcome.

Among others, during the virtual mediacon, Gretchen said she would like to combine infotainment with public service in her hosting chores. About her show “Woman in Action,” she said “I really want to help and reach out to people in need.” Initially, she just wanted to give away 50 bicycles to those in need of it, but so far she has donated about a thousand, thanks to those who helped her out in this advocacy. “There are many possibilities opened for this show,” she stressed.

February 1 marks Gretchen’s TV comeback as she co-anchors “The Big Story” with Roby Alampay from Monday to Friday at 8pm on One News, where she will be showcasing her versatility as a news presenter. Viewers of TV5 are certainly agog over fun-filled shows slated to premiere one after the other, courtesy of  blocktimers of the network, among them Brightlight Productions.

One of them is  “Sunday Kada,” an upcoming comedy show directed by Edgar Mortiz, set to be launched on Sunday, October 18 from 3-4pm. Promising a full-laughter Sunday viewing, the show features Jayson Gainza, Ritz Azul, Wacky Kiray, Miles Ocampo, Daniel Matsunaga, Jerome Ponce, Josh Colet, Sunshine Garcia, Jhen Maloles, and Badji Mortiz. The show will air every Sunday.

The show marks the return of Ritz Azul to TV5 where she started. Asked how she felt about going back to TV5, Ritz said “masaya ako na nakabaik where I started because when I became a Kapamilya, I did not naman burn my bridge sa TV5. Dun ako lumaki sa ABS-CBN where I made many shows. So it’s like nag-college ako, then umuwi ako.

“Masaya ako na may mga ganitong show pa rin tayo sa gitna ng pandemya, na may oportunidad pa rin na magtrabaho…at natutuwa ako sa tiwala na binibigay nila sa amin.” She said she has no special segment in the show. “Everyone is given a share of the spotlight, pantay-pantay kami.”

Like Ritz, Wacky Kiray is excited and happy over the chance to have work amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. “Masuerte pa rin kami, lalo na sa akin kasi wala na mga comedy bars kaya ang oportunidad na ito malaking bagay. At masaya ang show na ito. Binabasa pa lang namin ang script, sobra-sobra na tawanan namin. We exert team effort para mapaganda ang show.”

Among the rest, Wacky felt doubly lucky because he is also in “Lunch Out Loud,” which premieres on October 19, from 12nn-2pm on TV5 and airs from Monday to Saturday.

“LOL,” a noontime variety show has in its cast Billy Crawford, Alex Gonzaga, K Brosas, Bayani Agbayani, KC Montero and Macoy Dubs. A

Billy said the show offers a lot of fun and surprises via its games and contests which gives viewers at home the chance of winning. 

He added that he feels so blessed to be working at this time and that he’s very thankful to TV5 for tapping him to be part of  “LOL” which he describes as a “high energy show, whose every segment is super masaya.”

With this daily show, will Billy be affected in his duties as a family man? He and Çoleen Garcia are now parents. Billy said it will just be a matter of time management, especially when his wife decide to get back to work in the near future.. 

But at the moment, this isn’t a bother yet for Billy, knowing that Çoleen is so serious in her mother role. “Saludo ako kay Çoleen, she breastfeed our baby and is really serious in her motherly obligations. “But when she decides to go back to work, I won’t get on the her way,” Billy stressed. 

KC Montero is also very excited about being in “Lunch Out Loud,” and not only because it affords him the time to be working with his friend Billy. Having been a host of beauty pageants and other big events for 20 years, he said this is a different experience, this noontime show. “It gives me a different feel, this is very exciting, a lot of fun.”

Last August, Cignal TV and TV5 Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan opened the doors of his network to displaced workers in the entertainment industry, a clear and generous way of saying that the priorities of the network is to give a helping hand and keep afloat people affected by the pandemic.

Chairman Pangilinan said “We are revving up our entertainment content creation and will need creatives, talents, directors, scriptwriters, cameramen etc.” And soon after his open invitation, several blocktime deals were signed up and shows now in production feature many popular stars in addition to their own roster of talents.

Awarded broadcast journalist Luchi Cruz-Valdes has turned talk show host with TV5’s newest program, “Usapang Real Life with Luchi,” which started last Aug. 15, but in a recent mediacon, she said this isn’t a career shift, just a much welcomed and “fantastic opportunity to try something new, to explore new territories.”

Luchi remains head of the news and public affairs department of TV 5 Network. A recipient of the PMPC Excellence In Broadcasting Lifetime Achievement Award, Luchi was formerly with GMA News and Public Affairs and ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs. 

Luchi admitted that she was never an on-camera person, and that though in a lighter sense and mood, her show still delivers news, but this time about showbiz and celebrities. Every person always has a story to tell. Whether it’s about their personal life or their struggles and their triumphs; each narrative deserves to be heard. With this new weekly lifestyle program, “Usapang Real Life with Luchi,” Pinoys are in for a Saturday night filled with stories of hope and positivity.

Line-produced by ContentCows Company, “Usapang Real Life with Luchi” shows the veteran newscaster and noted investigative reporter  in a new light. Here we meet a different side of Luchi: one who is lighthearted, nurturing, and compassionate. This side of her allows her to connect to her guests, bringing out close and personal stories of celebrities that many people do not usually get to see.  

The show showcases ordinary Filipinos and encourages them to share their stories to illustrate that all of us, the famous and the homespun, go through the same struggles, the same challenges, the same acts of courage, and compassion for each other.  At the end of the day, these meaningful stories and experiences are what makes us human and belong to the same community values and ideals we share as a nation.

In her talk show, Luchi herself opens up about little known facts of her life and the issues she is similarly facing as the rest of us. For instance, she’s a devoted mother of three and a widow, and an avid fan of Korean dramas. She likewise has her personal viewpoints on the issues of the day, as well as trendy topics and concerns that people talk about, which she shares on the show. These cover the gamut of life in the province, mental health, married life, motherhood, passions, and advocacies, and how people deal with change.  “Usapang Real Life with Luchi” puts a spotlight on life behind the camera; unveiling real experiences and celebrating our common humanity. It’s about harnessing the lessons of everyday life and using these to empower and give hope.

KC Concepcion and Karen Davila were Luchi’s first guests in the pilot episode which premiered August 15. Other celebrities that have since appeared on the show are Darna star, Jane De Leon, Through Night and Day’s Alessandra de Rossi, Youtube sensation Emman Nimedez, in one of his last interviews, as well as Tiktok influencers Marvin “Bhie” Fojas, Zendee, Richo “Walang Ganun Mars” Bautista and Christian Antolin, and Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray. 

Each episode of “Usapang Real Life with Luchi” tells the narrative of different individuals, from comedians, athletes, digital influencers, celebrities and even Luchi’s colleagues. Other episodes will feature real life stories of guests such as celebrity power couples Richard Gomez & Lucy Torres and Vic Sotto & Pauleen Luna-Sotto, the Divine Diva Zsa Zsa Padilla and the Queen of Philippine Soap Opera Judy Ann Santos.
